Year 6 Spelling booklet containing all key spelling rules covered in the SATs. Pupil recording booklet to revise and practise spellings containing common rules. 49 pages in total. In the SATs, children will be tested on spelling rules for Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6. In 2016, only 2/20 of the words used in the SATs spelling test were on the English appendix. As a Year 6 teacher for over 15 years, this lead me to make my own recording booklet for pupils to revise in class and at home. It is important to remember that the format of the spelling test means children must write these words correctly into a sentence. They do not normally fall at the start of the sentence so they do not need a capital letter.

A Short KS1 Writing unit based on the popular children’s picture book: The Pirates Next Door. The unit inspires quality, structured writing that meets the new KS1 writing KPis at Expected and Greater Depth Level The unit covers: Reading phase: inferring a character’s thoughts and actions Writing with a clear purpose and viewpoint Organising related ideas into sections and paragraphs short openings and endings past tense regular and irregular verbs using capital letters for proper nouns I started this unit with drama - getting into the role of the villagers and focusing on their viewpoint. How were they feeling when the Pirates arrived in town? Why were most villagers angry? What did they think? say? Then they completed the reading inference speech bubbles for 2 different character viewpoints. (see example) Then I held a council meeting for the residents of ‘Dull-On-Sea’ and the children were given a format to record the ‘notes of the meeting’ From the notes- they used a structured letter template to create a letter to the council complaining about the Pirates’ arrival. This was highly successful and created fantastic letters with clear viewpoints. Covers 5 different sections of the book. Can be used as question sheet to answer independently or prompts for guided reading session.

Provides reading phase: opportunity to look in depth how poets: -Manipulate grammatical structures for deliberate effect -Use precise noun and verb choices to create atmosphere -Use High Level punctuation at the KS2 Greater Depth Standard for deliberate effect (Hyphens, dashes, commas to separate clauses and semi colon.) Children can use the language choices to create own poetry.
